With so many cleaning companies and individual cleaners available, choosing the right one for your home can feel daunting. Here is what to look for — and what to watch out for.
Employed vs self-employed cleaners
Many cleaning companies use self-employed contractors rather than directly employed staff. This affects insurance, accountability, and consistency. With employed cleaners, the company takes full responsibility. With subcontractors, accountability can be blurred. Always ask how the company classifies its staff.
Insurance
This is non-negotiable. Any cleaning company working in your home should carry:
- Public liability insurance: Covers damage to your property
- Employer's liability insurance: Covers the cleaner if they are injured on your premises
Ask for proof of insurance before booking. A reputable company will provide this without hesitation.
DBS checks
