Fascias and soffits are the boards that run along the roofline of your property — the fascia is the flat board the gutters attach to, and the soffit is the underside of the roof overhang. They are often overlooked, but they play an important structural role and, when neglected, can become a serious problem.
What causes fascias and soffits to deteriorate?
The main culprits are biological growth and moisture. Algae, moss, and mould thrive on the shaded, damp surfaces of soffits in particular. On uPVC boards, this produces green and black discolouration. On older timber boards, it causes softening and rot.
Birds, wasps, and squirrels can also damage soffits if they find gaps — so clean, intact boards are the first line of defence against pest ingress into the roof space.
Signs your fascias need cleaning
- Green or black discolouration on uPVC boards
- A patchy, faded appearance instead of a uniform white or colour
- Visible algae or mould in the joints between boards
- Staining streaking down from the roofline onto the wall below
Signs your soffits need cleaning
- Green or grey patches on the underside of the overhang
- Cobwebs or insect activity around the soffit vents
- General dinginess that makes the roofline look aged
Signs of more serious issues
- Soft spots or flex in timber fascias — suggesting rot has begun
- Paint peeling or bubbling — suggesting trapped moisture
- Gaps between boards or where the fascia meets the roof — potential entry points for pests and water
Professional cleaning vs repair
Regular cleaning prevents the deterioration that leads to repair. Most discolouration on uPVC fascias and soffits is entirely removable with the right cleaning treatments. We use specialist uPVC cleaners and biocidal treatments that restore the surface and inhibit future growth.
If we identify damage that requires repair rather than cleaning, we will tell you — clearly and honestly.
