Most homeowners do not think about their gutters until something goes wrong. By then, the damage has often already started. Here are the signs that your gutters need attention — and why acting early saves money.
1. Water overflowing during rain
The most obvious sign: if you can see water spilling over the front or sides of the gutter during a rainstorm rather than flowing through the downpipes, there is a blockage. Even a partial blockage will cause overflow in heavy rain.
2. Plants growing in the gutters
If you can see weeds, moss, or even small plants sprouting from your gutters, there is definitely enough debris in there to warrant a clean. Biological growth retains moisture and accelerates the deterioration of the gutter itself.
3. Staining on the exterior walls
Dark vertical streaks or tide marks on brickwork or render below the gutterline indicate overflow — water has been running down the wall rather than through the downpipe. This can lead to damp penetration if left unchecked.
4. Sagging gutters
Gutters full of wet, compacted debris become extremely heavy. Over time, this weight causes the brackets to pull away from the fascia board, leaving gutters sagging or pulling away from the roofline.
5. It has been more than a year
Even if your gutters look fine from ground level, an annual clean is good maintenance for any property. After leaf fall in autumn is the ideal time. Properties surrounded by trees may need cleaning twice a year.
What happens if you ignore blocked gutters?
Blocked gutters cause water to back up and overflow. That water goes somewhere — usually into the wall cavity, causing damp, or down the exterior of the property, causing staining and eventually structural damage. The cost of repairing damp or a damaged fascia board is significantly greater than the cost of a gutter clean.
We take before and after photos on every gutter cleaning visit so you have a clear record of what was there and what we removed.
